Plz help me in this que

Define the Symbol # by the following equation:
x # y = (x-y)(x-y) , if x>y
x # y = x+y/4, if x<=y

Now, if x # y= -1, then which one of the following could be true?
1. x=y
2. x>y
3. x < y
A) 1 only
B) 2 only
C) 3 only
D) 1 & 3 only
E) 1,2 & 3

now what is the simplest way to solve the problem? which number should I guess to set for x & y ? and why?

if x>y then (x-y)=+ve and x#y will alyays be =+ve so it cant be a solution

if x=y=-0.5 then x#y=-1==> it is a possible solution

if y>x let x=-5 and y=1 then x#y=-1 ==>it is also a possible solution

thus the correct choice is C
