Gre Quants question 25th june 2008

1. Given that 'x' is not equal to 0.
Col A: -2(x^2)
Col B: (x^2)/3

2. Col A: sqrt11+sqrt17
Col B: sqrt14+sqrt14

3. Some dollars are to be divided among some x people so that they are going to get atleast some dollars
Col A: number of ways to distribute the amount so that one receives some x dollars
Col B: number of ways to distribute dollars

4. Given that, if the average of first 5 members is some value 'x' and average of total 12 members is given some value 'y', then What is the average of last 7 members?
(Question is similar to this but.. with some numerical values in place of 'x' and 'y')

5. Given two equations of a straight line and asked to find the point that lies between them?

Can sumone solve these questions and tel me the ans....

a)John wrote a phone number on a note that was later lost. John can remember that the number had 7 digits, the digit "1" appeared in the last three places and "0" did not appear at all. What is the probability that the phone number contains at least two prime digits?
a) 15/16
b) 11/16
c) 11/12
d) 1/2
e) 5/8

b)A group of 4 pumps are filling a tank. Each of the 3 smaller pumps works at 2/3rds the rate of the largest pump. If all 4 pumps work at the same time, they should fill the tank in what fraction of the time.... that it would have taken the largest pump if it operated alone?

c)Given a cuboid whose faces are painted red and the cuboid is cut vertically into 27 pieces. If the pieces are taken out after cutting vertically then how many of these 27 pieces had red color face?

they want number of ppl which do not have licenses and which are NOT arrested. Hence i guess its (A ^ B')

u agree that we shuld find A^B???....then the answer must be sub set of A as well as subset of B....so it cant be more than 20(which is B)....im pretty sure of it...
is thiz ok wit u???

n im gettin a solution of 12=A^B....donno 4 sure though

hence n(A^B') = 30+74-74=30

Other than that....please let me kno the steps to follow to reach answer of A^B as 12.. m confused

B) Assume that all the 4 spouts are kept running for an hour. at this rate
tap A = X lit/hrs(largest pump)
tap B = 2X/3 lit/hrs
tap C = 2X/3 lit/hrs
tap D = 2X/3 lit/hrs

total quantity per hr = X+[(2X/3)*3] = 3X

if largest pump operated alone for 1 hr...

total quantity per hr = X

for a tank of size 3X, 4 taps will take 1 hour while Tap A alone will take 3 Hrs

ANs. 4 taps will take (1/3)th of the time of Tap A alone

C)

regardless of how many pieces a painted cube is cut into VERTICALLY, there will only be 2 pieces (extreme sides) will remain painted.

imagine cutting a loaf of bread(wibs wala Very Happy)....the first and last pieces only will have colored sides....rest will be white in case of bread.

please let me know if any premise is wrong...
